To fail or not to fail, that is the question facing school districts around the country.
This week in Journalism class, we are discussing a Washington Post story about a new grading policy in a school district in suburban Washington, D.C. Teachers there are no longer assigning failing grades, only incompletes. Obviously, reasonable people will disagree about whether this was a wise move. Other school districts have taken similar steps, but according to the reporter, this policy is among the most drastic.
The story is an example of great journalism -- it includes the perspective of administrators, teachers, students and parents. When students were asked what the reporter's opinion was, they had no idea. Good thing!
We also are using it as fodder for editorial writing. Students will be writing and supporting their opinion on the grading policy.
